Improving the Quality of Education Through a Library in Doba, Chad

With slow development and urbanization, Doba, Chad has very few socio-educational centers and literacy centers for young people and adults are rare. Also challenging academic performance are large class sizes, averaging 55 students per class. In certain establishments, classes even host 120 students. Schools experience insufficient numbers of teachers, absence of books, and a lack of seating for all students in the classrooms. Some students study in rooms without roofs, while others learn completely outdoors. Salesians consistently serve the most poor and vulnerable young people in communities, and the students at the Don Bosco Education Center of Doba are no different. The lack of disposable income results in students not having textbooks for their academics nor books to read for personal enrichment. Because the students do not have money for books, they experience low academic performance. Free, public access would allow students to utilize resources to continue education outside of the classroom. Currently, the Salesians have a space for a library, but no furniture or books for the use of the students. To renovate the current space, the project will purchase 50 tables, 50 chairs, and 10 shelves from a manufacturer in Cameroon and to equip the library with learning materials, textbooks will be procured.
