Solar Electrician and Entrepreneurship Training
Solar Electrician and Entrepreneurship Training

Tanzania has a population of more than 44,840,000, of which only 10 percent has access to electricity. The government recognizes the need to invest in alternative energy sources, which include solar, biogas and wind turbines. There are programs in place to implement solar energy efficiently and the impact of these is increasing, but success has been limited due to extreme poverty and awareness barriers. Don Bosco VTCs Dodoma and Iringa are developing a solar energy training centre through their existing electrical training departments, through the establishment of solar energy programs to train 170 students annually. The project will, in the long term, contribute to economic empowerment for the students who mainly come from poor and marginalized backgrounds, with a majority unable to afford to pay even the minimal fees required. In addition, others have had traumatizing childhoods and this has affected their ability to interrelate with other members of the community.

With the SE project, Don Bosco VTCs Dodoma and Iringa plan to implement training in the field of photovoltaic (PV) technology. As one of the experienced leading institutions in TVET in East Africa, the SE project will give the school and the students a competitive advantage over their counterparts in renewable energy technologies. Once successfully implemented at DB Dodoma and Iringa, the project will be replicated in other VTCs in Kenya and in South Sudan.
