The Sunrise Project for Cairo’s Urban Refugees and Local Hosts
The Sunrise Project for Cairo’s Urban Refugees and Local Hosts

The goal of the Sunrise Project is to uplift the living standards and quality of life of 1,200 Sub-Saharan African refugees and vulnerable Egyptians in Greater Cairo in two years by promoting economic independence and resilience as they resettle or voluntarily repatriate to their homeland. This will be accomplished by increasing access to Livelihood, Economic Empowerment (with a focus on women’s empowerment), and Wellness opportunities.

Refugees in Egypt suffer from widespread poverty, and they receive insufficient income from subsistence employment, aid agency-provided cash assistance, and/or remittances to afford their daily living expenses. In response, the Sunrise Project will provide short-term TVET courses to provide 1,200 beneficiaries with increased access to market-driven, sustainable work and economic security. The short-term nature of the course (3 months) provides flexibility and reduces the chances of attrition of participating beneficiaries for the oftentimes transient nature of the target population who is known to be highly mobile.
