Transforming the Lives of Students with Disabilities in Cambodia
Transforming the Lives of Students with Disabilities in Cambodia

The Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia supports the education of at-risk and vulnerable youth across Cambodia. It oversees the several educational centers in Cambodia including technical schools and literary centers and provides some financial support to youth through the Don Bosco Children Fund. The Don Bosco Technical School Kep (DBK) was founded in 2011, in Kep City on the Gulf of Thailand. The technical school offers a range of two-year programs for male and female students between the ages of 16-22. DBK is dedicated to providing a holistic education to disadvantaged and at-risk youth and giving them the means to escape the cycle of poverty. As part of DBK’s mission, a quality technical education is possible for every student regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability. However, the current DBK campus is composed of five buildings each of several stories all of which are non-handicap-accessible. Thus, students with physical disabilities have no alternative but to rely on their peers to assist them up staircases and between floors. This project would eventually transform DBK into a truly handicap-accessible and barrier-free campus allowing for the full inclusion of current students with disabilities into campus life as well as the necessary infrastructure to provide an education to more students from one of Cambodia’s most vulnerable groups.
