Formation of African Priest in Spain to Work in Equatorial Guinea
Formation of African Priest in Spain to Work in Equatorial Guinea

The Salesians of Don Bosco in Yaoundé, Cameroon supported one man to travel to Spain as part of his formation to be ordained a priest for the ATE Province. Through its mission for the promotion of youth through education and vocational training, each of the ATE Province’s fourteen presences carries out at least three educational or pastoral projects (professional center, primary school, secondary school, youth center, dispensary, home for street children, parish or prison ministry). To carry out this mission, the Congregation needs great strength in human resources provided by those who go through priestly, Salesian formation in order to meet the challenges of education, evangelization and human promotion. The ATE Province spans an area that is very culturally and linguistically diverse. Particularly, carrying out missions in Equatorial Guinea necessitates the use of Spanish which is the instructional language of the country. In order to support the schools that the Salesians have established in Equatorial Guinea, teachers and pastoral ministers trained in Spanish are needed to promote education and evangelization that meets the people where they are. The pastoral formation that this brother acquires in Spain will in turn enrich the ATE Province which is very young and does not yet have as strong of a tradition in Salesian values. Studying in Spain, where the Salesians first established a presence in 1881, allows new candidates from the Province to immerse themselves in a well-founded tradition of Salesian charism. This exposure then allows them to bring home their experience and assist in the spiritual development of their people and their country.
