Learning Materials for Don Bosco Vocational Training Center, Bombo

The right to work is an important value of Catholic Social Teaching. Currently, the youth in Bombo have limited options to receive education or earn an income, and the International Labor Organization notes that of those who start vocational training, less than half complete the program. Without training for formal labor market jobs, youth are susceptible to recruitment by violent extremism. The Salesians value educating youth and providing the means to earn a living wage in Bombo, and they seek to fill this gap.

In May 2018, fire struck the Bombo school dormitory, incinerating everything inside but fortunately leaving all students safe. The victims were spared only the things they had on their persons at the time of the fire. The Salesians’ disposable income has gone towards the reconstruction of the dormitory and replacement of furniture to accommodate their poorest students. Thus, there is a great need of funding to replace the outdated technical equipment necessary to enhance education for the students. This project allowed the Salesians to purchase equipment for metal fabrication, plumbing, carpentry, welding, construction, electric, fashion and design, and hairdressing courses. Thus, they are able to teach students vocational skills using equipment to enhance their opportunity to earn livable wages to support themselves and their families.
