Preventing Drug Consumption by Youngsters in Honduras
Preventing Drug Consumption by Youngsters in Honduras

The main goal of this project is to reduce the involvement of young people living at high risk of drug abuse and related criminal activities in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. According to the Honduran Institute for the Prevention of Alcoholism, Drug Addiction and Drug Dependence (IHADFA), 14.7% of young people under 20 years of age have used marijuana at least once in their life and 6.8% have tried cocaine. This situation is considered a major public concern, given the irreversible damages that consumption of these drugs produces in the brain of youngsters. This project works directly with young people and their families to reinforce their self-esteem and moral values and to strengthen their capacity to make decisions regarding drug use, as well as to provide them with a drug-free environment and the opportunity to form healthy relationships with peers. These actions will bring about positive changes in their lives, which will keep them away from drugs and criminal networks. Additionally, the project enables young people to productively contribute to society by developing technical competencies that will allow them to be linked to a job or to manage their self-employment.
